The Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience (WISIR), and Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) are looking for a STEM graduate with a passion for change making and event management.

The Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator will support two important sustainability initiatives:

The Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator will support the WISIR as the primary administrative support and event coordinator for the the Legacy Leadership Lab (L3) which is an 18-month long national initiative to bring together small business owners, social purpose organization support agencies, social financiers, public sector support agencies and academic researchers. In addition, the successful candidate will support WISIR’s broader stakeholder business development objectives focused on researching, testing and disseminating novel social innovation change lab processes.

The Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator will support SWR by managing the efforts to build a positive Culture of Sustainability (CoS) at evolv1 and inspiring commitment toward sustainability actions among the building citizens. The successful candidate will co-lead the development of all CoS workshops as well as build and manage relationships essential to CoS research (including those with government, academia and building tenants).

Employment Details:

Term: Start date is negotiable

Compensation: $38,000 annually

Reporting To: The successful candidate will be an employee of Sustainable Waterloo Region, however supports both organizations, reporting to the Program Division Manager of SWR and the Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo, School of Environment Enterprise and Development (SEED) and Director of Academic Programs at the Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience (WISIR).

Work Location: The Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator will be based out of evolv1 building at 420 Wes Graham Way, Waterloo, with some travel to meetings and events throughout Waterloo Region.

Work Hours: The position requires the Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator to work a flexible schedule as events occur on the occasional evening/weekend.

As Events and Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator you will:

  • Coordinate program logistics, instructional topics and workshop materials in STEM related topics for both L3 and CoS;
  • Travel for workshops hosted in five different Canadian cities;
  • Facilitate technical and engagement workshops focused on various engineering, environmental sustainability, and business-related topics;
  • Be the liaison and “face” of the Culture of Sustainability behavioural change research to external parties (such as building tenants);
  • Maintain existing, and develop new relationships within academia, funders, government officials and for both initiatives;
  • Develop research briefings and event summary reports, as required, that identity high-level critical issues and leverage points;
  • Perform analysis, capture workshop highlights and produce distinct public-facing and participant-facing event summaries and reports for grantors, complete with photos and branding, and distribution digitally;
  • And support the overall business development of WISIR’s Social Innovation Lab service offering through stakeholder engagement and pilot testing of initiatives within the Waterloo Region.

Desired skills, attributes, and experience:

  • Graduated in STEM with a demonstrated passion for advancing sustainability;
  • Naturally someone who sparks interest in sustainability and is someone who motivates participants into action;
  • Ability to read and understand technical research in the areas of building performance and small business sustainability;
  • Enjoys collaborating and setting measurable goals for program participants with ongoing analysis of KPIs;
  • Demonstrated experience in sustainability best practices, sustainable building performance or behavioural change research considered an asset;
  • Proven event management experience required;
  • Workshop delivery and facilitation experience considered a strong asset;
  • Ability to manage complex collaborative relationships and projects across both staff and volunteer teams;
  • And exceptional organizational skills, with strong attention to detail;

WISIR – L3 Initiative:

The goal of the Waterloo Institute for Social Innovation and Resilience’s Legacy Leadership Lab (L3) collaborative is to redesign Canada’s small business ownership succession ecosystem with the goal of enabling small business owners looking to retire in converting their businesses into social purpose organizations. The L3 is part of the federally-funded Ecosystem Mobilization Initiative of the Investment Readiness Program is to improve understanding of the most effective approaches to building the social finance ecosystem and to establish and/or expand initiatives that address social finance and social innovation ecosystem gaps.

Culture of Sustainability Initiative:

Imagine an office building where building managers, tenants, supervisors, and employees monitor their energy and water use, carbon emissions, and waste production, and collaborate to find an optimal balance between environmental impact, employee wellbeing, and organizational success. Imagine training programs, performance evaluations, and incentive structures that reflect an employee’s contribution to sustainability. Imagine if, over time, green building design features coupled with formal management practices led to a social/environmental consciousness deeply embedded within the fabric of the building, such that a sustainability orientation is simply and automatically assumed.

This scenario describes a culture of sustainability (COS), characterized by shared values, norms, language, and practices focused on making individual and societal choices that foster social, economic and environmental sustainability. A key question is how to develop and foster a COS within a commercial office space, and specifically within high-performance green buildings (i.e., structures created with the dual intention of reducing environmental impact and improving occupant comfort and health. Our goal is to produce an effective and transferable evidence-based COS engagement strategy, including guidelines, tools, processes, and measures, that can help realize the full potential of commercial green building design. We also aim to establish the business case for a COS strategy by demonstrating its ability to reduce environmental impacts, increase human wellbeing, and support organizational success.

CoS – Timeline of Activities: To be determined by the successful candidate, with a target of 2-3 workshops in 2019. Workshops are determined by research trends on an ongoing basis.
