The post holder will be responsible for coordinating and delivering a range of events, which successfully raise awareness of academic research and social responsibility and sustainability issues. The post holder will work to support the University’s efforts to address the Sustainable Development Goals in the student experience and through its community engagement.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Plan, deliver and monitor an annual calendar of events to raise awareness of sustainability and social responsibility issues, providing sustainability advice to event organisers within the University. 60%
  2. Develop and roll out advice to event organisers across the University on social responsibility and sustainability issues. 15%
  3. Support the delivery of the Student Residence Sustainability Awards, working in partnership with ResLife Team to provide a support framework for student participants to enhance the student experience. 15%
  4. Support the University’s reporting in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals, compiling progress reports for stakeholders, demonstrating the impact of events. 5%
  5. Contribute to the social responsibility, sustainability and climate crisis programmes of the University of Edinburgh, including the development of the Department of Social Responsibility and Sustainability. 5%

Planning & Organising

• Plan, deliver and monitor an annual calendar of events in collaboration with stakeholders and the rest of the SRS Department, this will include Visions for Change, Research Mixer, Careers in Sustainability and the Sustainability Awards Celebration.
• Work in partnership with the ResLife Team to deliver and develop the Student Residence Sustainability Awards.
• Work with key stakeholders to monitor and identify further opportunities to promote on social responsibility and sustainability issues through events to staff, students and the general public.
• Provide updates or progress reports on all tasks and projects as required by Student Engagement, Events and Reporting Manger on a weekly basis.

Problem Solving

• Identify opportunities to improve awareness of academic research and University wide efforts on social responsibility and sustainability issues through events.
• Work with key internal stakeholders to understand the social responsibility and sustainability issues which will need to be addressed by event guidance.
• Work with key internal and external stakeholders to identify problems in planning and delivering events, using initiative to identify and resolve problems.

Decision Making

• Use own judgement to determine feasibility of delivering events.
• Deal with enquiries and requests relating to sustainability and social responsibility issues.
• Communicate accurate and up-to-date information for reporting purposes.
• Use own initiative & manage own workload, managing priorities according to timescales.
• Meet deadlines and give responses in timescales agreed with line manager, stakeholders, and rest of team.

Key Contacts/Relationships

• Reporting to the Student Engagement, Events and Reporting Manager and working closely with other colleagues in the SRS Department.
• Develop working relationship with the ResLife Team colleagues, identifying key contacts for specific projects.
• Liaise and engage with academic staff, professional services staff and students around social responsibility and sustainability projects as part of day to day planned work.
• Develop relationships with staff from across the sector including others working to embed social responsibility and sustainability issues in the student experience and through community engagement.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Experience of working on events management, including the planning and delivery of events.
• Experience of working on social responsibility and sustainability projects with in the further and higher education sector.
• Understanding of social responsibility and sustainability issues within the context of the student experience.
• HNC / HND or equivalent and / or demonstrable or relevant work experience in social responsibility and sustainability initiatives and / or events.
• Very strong interpersonal and team-work skills, with a pro-active and positive approach to customer relations to apply to interactions with key stakeholders.
• Ability to plan own work activities to ensure effective service delivery, resolving conflicting timescales and priorities independently with limited supervision.
• Experience of volunteer coordination
• Ability to effectively plan and deliver events and workshops.
• Ability to analyse and report on quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources.
• An excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office, IT software packages and social media.
• Friendly and welcoming approach to staff, students and external visitors.

Dimensions

The department has a university wide role providing advice and support on a variety of social responsibility and sustainability issues to academic departments and professional services.

Job Context & Other Relevant Information

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will have capacity for contributing to the successful development of a thriving, well respected and highly-professional unit. The post holder is expected to be able to work evenings and some weekends to support the delivery of this work.

This role is grade UE06 and therefore the post holder is automatically included in membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subject to the USS membership criteria, unless they indicate that they choose not to join the Scheme.

Salary

The role is grade UE06 and attracts an annual salary of £28,331 to £32,816 for 35 hours each week. Salary is paid monthly by direct transfer to your Bank or Building Society account, normally on the 28th of the month. Salaries for part-time staff are calculated on the full-time scales, pro-rata to the Standard Working Week.
