This study, for the Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, required project management and research skills to effectively engage social housing stakeholders. Improving energy efficiency in social housing is a key priority for BEIS, who commissioned this study to understand the barriers to sustainable retrofit for housing associations and local authorities.
Muon Events and Cambridge Architectural Research carried out telephone and face-to-face interviews with over 40 social housing providers, plus eight organisations involved in the retrofit supply chain. We spoke to social landlords of different sizes and across different geographic locations – including urban/rural operators. We also spoke to people working on different operational functions in social landlords: surveyors, asset managers, financial controllers, and retrofit specialists.
We recorded each interview in a searchable database held in Excel, and analysed the qualitative data from interviews using pattern-matching and frequency counts. We also wrote two short case studies to illustrate important findings.
